Sensations and Emotions
The Language of the Body
Learning to read and work with physical sensations and emotions is a core skill in healing trauma and building emotional resilience.
Why Sensations and Emotions Matter
Our bodies are constantly communicating with us through physical sensations — tightness, warmth, tingling, heaviness, expansion. These sensations are the language of the nervous system, carrying information about our emotional states, our history, and our needs. In trauma, this communication can become distorted or overwhelming. Learning to work skillfully with sensations and emotions is central to somatic healing.
Emotional Circuits in the Brain and Body
Emotions are not just mental events — they are whole-body experiences involving the brain, nervous system, hormones, and organs. Neuroscientist Antonio Damasio's research shows that emotions are fundamentally somatic: they begin as changes in the body that are then perceived and interpreted by the brain. Understanding this helps us work with emotions more effectively, meeting them where they actually live — in the body.
Physical Sensation Awareness
Developing the ability to notice and name physical sensations — what somatic therapists call 'interoception' — is a foundational skill in trauma healing. When we can observe sensations with curiosity rather than fear, we gain access to important information and develop greater capacity to regulate our nervous system. This skill can be developed through practice, and it becomes easier over time.
Working Within the Window of Tolerance
Effective work with sensations and emotions happens within the Window of Tolerance — the zone of optimal arousal where we can process experience without becoming overwhelmed. Therapy helps clients expand this window, developing greater capacity to stay present with difficult sensations and emotions while maintaining a sense of safety and groundedness.
